Dear ,

It's time for another Tiny Trullo update! You can read how the trees are doing, about the upcoming olive harvest (and how you can experience it!), a delicious recipe, an offer to spend this winter in my trullo and much more. Enjoy!

How are the trees doing?
Let me start with this most frequently asked question. I wish I had different news, but the trees are having a hard time. Not only because of the extremely high temperatures and the drought but mainly because the deadly Xylella bacteria is spreading like wildfire. Xylella thrives in the heat, while the resistance of the trees actually deteriorates. In this blog, you can read how they are doing, and how the advice of the 'tree doctor' I found may save them.

Together we are stronger; adopt an olive tree
More than 15 people have adopted a tree in recent years. For a deceased loved one, as a friendship tree, for themselves ("a birthday gift that keeps giving"), or as a sponsorship for their company.
Some 'adoptive parents' have even visited and performed a ritual at their tree. Tjimka hung the nameplate around her tree, Debby & Ruud commemorated their deceased friend Marcel, and Sasha attached a Jewish mezuzah to the tree to protect it. This makes them extra connected to the trees and the land and I think that really helps in the fight against the deadly Xylella bacteria.
The other adoptive parents who use the cutting board of their tree at home, who enjoy their 5 litres of freshly pressed olive oil (and who share it with their friends in small bottles), also contribute to the connection and energy needed to boost the trees' resistance. I believe in energy; what you think about grows. So let's all continue to think about the trees.

Would you also like to adopt a tree? Thanks to the 'adoptive parents' I can also pay part of the (increased and necessary maintenance costs). It is needed now more than ever! And, when the olive harvest starts to decline (you already notice this all over the world: fewer olives, more expensive oil because there is less supply), then you as an adoptive parent are always assured of your annual 5-litre can. After the olive harvest in November, the oil first goes to the adoptive parents, then to other orders, and when it's gone, it's gone.

Do you want to experience the olive harvest?
The olive harvest takes place in the first week of November. It is one of the most beautiful and unique events I have experienced. From one day to another you see all the locals working with ladders, sticks, shaking machines and the roads are full of trucks loaded with olives...
Unfortunately, I will not be in Puglia myself this year, but you can experience it! My Trullo and tiny house among the olive trees, the lovely Studio and the beautiful Townhouse in the historic centre of the village of Ceglie Messapica are still available!
The weather and nature determine exactly which day it will be, which cannot be predicted in advance. That week you will receive a personal invitation to attend the olive harvest on my land and perhaps even help if you feel like it. All you have to do for this unique experience is book one of my three 'Tiny Trullo accommodations' directly with me.

Recipe: The tastiest simple fennel salad
If you use really good olive oil, your recipes can be super simple. This fennel salad is one of my favorites. From spring to autumn, when fennel is in season, you can make delicious and unique salads with it:
  1. Shave the raw fennel into wafer-thin slices.
2a. Add capers, olive oil, salt and pepper.
2b. Instead of capers, you can also add orange slices and black olives to your fennel salad.
      3. Buon appetito!

Order olive oil?
My freshly pressed, organic, extra virgin olive oil always sells out within three weeks. And the harvest is decreasing every year, so be quick. You can order 1 or 3 litres and receive them at home (in the Netherlands) mid-December, or pick it up in Amsterdam (Haarlemmerplein) or in Curaçao (it won't arrive there until around February). Order quickly, because gone = gone!

P.S. If you adopt an olive tree, you will receive a unique 5-liter can of oil every year, plus a cutting board from your own tree!

Tiny Trullo was mentioned in Wendy Magazine!
For the summer issue of Wendy magazine, the editors were looking for Dutch people living in Mallorca to take a look inside their homes. Somehow they ended up with me, even though I haven't lived there for years. Of course I seized the opportunity and suggested that they make the report in the Airbnb villa that I always rent for my writing retreat. During the interview I was also able to mention my tiny trullo project; I actually fell in love with Puglia because it looks so much like my beloved Mallorca!

Do you want to live in my trullo this winter?
